Scottish Ensemble wins prestigious award for these bones, this flesh, this skin.

Scottish Ensemble is honoured to be joining awardees from Germany, Lithuania and Brazil as recipients of the 2021 Classical: Next Innovation Award for our digital project ‘these bones, this flesh, this skin‘ – part of our Solo Collaborations series of online work.

Since its inception in 2015, Classical: Next has been bringing to the forefront the movers and shakers of classical music, highlighting projects that focus on forward-thinking and unique standpoints. For the 2021 Award, 18 music journalists and experts from 16 countries and every continent made up the committee to decide upon the longlist. Afterwards, 5,000 members of the Classical: Next community had the opportunity to vote for their favourite, most innovative project – with Scottish Ensemble being one of the ultimate winners.

For this collaboration of music, dance and cinematography, Scottish Ensemble worked with composer Martin Suckling, choreographer Joan Clevillé of Scottish Dance Theatre, and cinematographer Genevieve Reeves. The online audiovisual work wasn’t made in response to, but rather in conjunction with the other artforms, and the resulting contextualising of layers invited the user to interact with this digital piece.

Our Artistic Director Jonathan Morton was interviewed by Andreas Kern, artist and founder of Piano City with fellow collaborators Joan Clevillé and Genevieve Reeves about this award-winning project.
