Scottish Ensemble Sinfonia ConcertanteThe Scottish Ensemble is off on tour again next Friday 17 February withSinfonia Concertante – concerts which showcase the distinctive voice of the viola with violist Lawrence Power. We’ll be starting at Eden Court, Inverness where the world première of Luke Bedford’sMagnificent Two-Headed Nightingale will take placeWe commissioned Luke to create a new companion piece to Mozart’sSinfonia Concertante using the same forces: horns, oboes, strings and solo violin and viola and we’re looking forward to beginning rehearsals next week. Earlier in January, Luke was named as one of three recipients of the prestigious Ernst von Siemens Foundation Composers’ Prize 2012, and we’re thrilled to be giving the first performances of his latest work so soon after the announcement. As well as the Mozart and Luke’s new piece, Lawrence will also be introducing many of us to the work of unfairly neglected 20th-century British composer William Alwyn in a performance of the composer’s poignant and nostalgic Pastoral Fantasia.
