Scottish Ensemble Celtic connectionsWe’re delighted to announce that our genre-defying collaboration with fiddler Chris Stout and harpist Catriona McKay will appear at the 2014 Spitalfields Festival and at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.
At the heart of the collaboration is Seavaigers by Sally Beamish. This double concerto for fiddle and harp with the Scottish Ensemble tells the story of a dramatic sea journey from Dundee to Shetland. It was written specifically for this combination of performers and atmospherically depicts the birds, dolphins, fears and adventures of a spectacular North Sea voyage.
Also in the programme is a major new SE commission based on a traditional Scottish tune. David Horne, Stuart MacRae, Anna Meredith, Alasdair Nicolson, Martin Suckling, and Alasdair Spratt were asked to write a variation on the theme and the results offer a fresh and engaging perspective on traditional Scottish melody.
Classical and traditional styles are also explored when Chris and Catriona join SE’s own Jonathan Morton as soloists in Bach’s well-loved Concerto for Two Violins in D minor.
