Scottish Ensemble is thrilled to present Anno, its collaboration with electronic-classical crossover composer Anna Meredith, in two Scottish cities this November.
Co-commissioned by Scottish Ensemble and Spitalfields Music, Anno is a new composition by Anna Meredith which intertwines movements from Vivaldi’s celebrated collection of four concerti, The Four Seasons, with new short pieces for electronics. Performed live, the audience experiences the event from the centre of a circle of screens, upon which is projected bespoke visuals created by Anna’s sister, the visual artist Eleanor Meredith.
Following its world premiere at London’s Oval Space in June 2016, as part of the Spitalfields Music Summer Festival 2016, the first Scottish performances will take place from 10 – 13 November at Tramway, Glasgow (10-11) and The Hub, Edinburgh (13).
Known for their visceral, energetic performance style, Scottish Ensemble’s performance of Vivaldi’s concerti adds a distinctive and welcome intimacy to the experience. As Gramophone magazine said of SE’s 2011 live recording: “The playing standard is excellent, with the strings of Scottish Ensemble finding a light and suitably transparent texture in the Vivaldi, matched by bright, stylish solos from Jonathan Morton…”
This recording was made at a performance called The Eight Seasons, which matched Vivaldi’s Baroque interpretations with Piazzolla’s Four Seasons of Buenos Aires – listen to the album here.
