Scottish Ensemble and Anna Meredith release Stoop, the first single from their new collaborative album

We’re very excited to release the first single from our new collaborative album with Anna Meredith.

Anno is a composition by Anna Meredith, commissioned by Scottish Ensemble and Spitalfields Music in 2016. Interspersing movements from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons with new music from Anna, Anno condenses our journey through the year into one hour, from the curious awakening of spring, through the mournful intensity of summer to the pinched hush of winter.

The piece was first written to be performed as part of a live, immersive, 360 degree performance, in which Scottish Ensemble and Anna Meredith blend old and new, electronic and acoustic, in a live experience that includes bespoke animated visuals from visual artist (and Anna’s sister) Eleanor Meredith.

At times haunting, fragile and beautiful, at others punchy and bombastic, whether experienced live or through headphones, Anno is a powerful experience that lingers long after the music has ended.

In May 2018, Anna and Scottish Ensemble then entered the studio to record the audio for an album which will be released on Friday 17 August on the Moshi Moshi label. Recorded using the unusual ‘binaural recording head’ technique, the listener will be able to hear the unique spatial aspects of the piece through headphones.

In June 2018, Moshi Moshi published a teaser track entitled Low Light – Ice, a composite of two tracks from the album in which one of Anna’s delicate, beautiful electronic compositions slides into the first movement from Vivaldi’s Winter. Then, in July 2018, Scottish Ensemble and Anna released the first single, Stoop. On the album, Stoop nestles between Vivaldi’s perky, chirpy Spring and that first intense blast of his Summer.

The full album will be released on double vinyl, CD, digital download, and as spatial binaural audio on Friday 17 August on the Moshi Moshi imprint and is available to pre-order here.

The live show

The album release coincides with the first day of six performances of Anno at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe. Taking place at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre on Friday 17 and Saturday 18 August, this is the first time the show will be performed at this international arts festival.

Seated in the middle of a semi-circle of giant screens, the audience will be taken on a journey through the year as Anna’s powerful piece, performed up close on electronics and strings by Anna and Scottish Ensemble, is accompanied by the quirky animated visuals of her sister, the visual artist Eleanor Meredith.

All Edinburgh Fringe performances are now on sale.
