Concerts by Candlelight 2025
Music from the past and present echoes through some of Scotland’s most awe-inspiring settings, in our annual Concerts by Candlelight, offering a captivating musical adventure.
We will take you on a journey by candlelight that explores new musical paths and connections including music by JS Bach, Philip Glass, Erkki-Sven Tüür and Caroline Shaw. A brand new work by Valentin Silvestrov, a Ukrainian composer currently living in exile in Germany, will receive its UK premiere. Known for music of serenity and transcendence, Silvestrov’s new piece Moments of Memory (VI), will perfectly complement this atmospheric and enchanting programme.

Moments of Memory (VI) has been co-commissioned by Scottish Ensemble, Australian Chamber Orchestra, Arctic Philharmonic, Melbourne Conservatorium of Music and Witold Lutosławski National Forum of Music for NFM Leopoldinum Orchestra. This piece marks the third composition supported by the Calder Commissioning Fund, created through a transformative donation made in memory of Scottish Ensemble’s late founder John Calder.
