Philip Glass at Southbank Centre
Scottish Ensemble explores the power and breadth of music for strings, with a dreamlike and contemporary programme. Performing music that delights, surprises and challenges, we will encourage the listener to explore new musical paths and connections.
Embark on a journey that traces the musical landscape of each piece and arrives at a performance of Philip Glass’ meditative Symphony No.3, written for 19 string players.
Glass said of the work that it ‘fell naturally into a four-movement form and even given the nature of the ensemble and solo writing, seems to have the structure of a true symphony, though in the core it is the symphony for strings.’
