December 2012 saw the Scottish Ensemble perform our annual concerts by candlelight in Dundee, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Perth, Aberdeen and Inverness. The programme included Britten’sVariations on a Theme of Frank Bridge and Bach’s iconic Goldberg Variations arranged for string orchestra by Dmitry Sitkovetsky. The second instalment of Martin Suckling’s Musical Postcards, Mr Jonathan Morton, His Ground was also premiered during the December Tour. Martin took his inspiration when composing this piece from our October Residency in Dundee where the Ensemble performed Pachabel’s Canon with amateurs and children in Dundee’s Caird Hall. He used a ground bass, similar to that in Pachabel’s Canon, but composed it for the highest and most prominent instrument in the Ensemble – Jonathan Morton’s violin.
Over 1500 people enjoyed our concerts by candlelight experience which received rave reviews.
Three musicians from the Ensemble also performed on The Review Show on BBC2 in December. They played an excerpt from Bach’sGoldberg Variations and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
