Scottish Ensemble delivers a series of workshops designed to help pupils at secondary schools prepare for their Higher Music exam across Glasgow and Aberdeen this February.

Scottish Ensemble has developed a bespoke two hour workshop devised to support S5-S6 pupils prepare for the listening element of their SQA Higher Music exam. Designed to take place over a double period, this workshop will explore significant sections of the syllabus’ Music Concept List through live performance by a Scottish Ensemble string quartet and interactive tasks which make use of digital and smart technology.

The Listen Live workshop offers a rare opportunity to bring an exam to life by contextualising musical concepts in a real performance, as well as inspiring pupils by hearing some of Scotland’s most accomplished professional musicians up close. Whilst learning from a CD is effective and practical, this workshop will lift the pupils’ experience and understanding to the next level by bringing listening concepts to life and allowing the pupils to unpick the music and put it back together, deepening and embedding learning. The idea is that by experiencing and hearing the sounds up close – and at their most powerful – the experience will stay with pupils as they prepare for their exam.

Experienced workshops leader and composer Eve Harrison will lead pupils through a range of musical works from different periods and give them tools to help identify elements such as structure, period, phrasing and special techniques. Eve will also use her own specially-commissioned composition as an effective way of condensing all the learning points into one bespoke, short, intense listening experience, which will bring the music into the present day for the young people.

This process will be enhanced by the use of a specially-created project app, which will offer additional content and interactive and visual learning to reinforce some of the techniques explored in the workshop.
