Event Navigation

Following on from our successful Residency in the city in March 2016, we are excited to return to Dundee for our fifth Residency, with events ranging from bespoke meditation sessions with people undergoing chemotherapy to a public concert on board one of Dundee’s key tourist attractions, the HM Frigate Unicorn.

Offering a slightly different format to previous Residencies, this fifth stay in the city comprises three intensive days of events created in partnership with key institutions across Dundee, including Dundee and Angus Instrumental Services, the HM Frigate Unicorn, Ninewells Hospital and Maggie’s Dundee. Each day has been programmed following conversations with the communities and individuals involved, so as to genuinely reflect the needs of each group.

Launching in Dundee in October 2012, SE Residencies are all about bringing the joy of making and listening to music to as many people as possible. By taking music out of the concert hall and putting it directly in the community, the aim is to bring classical music to a wider group of people by placing it in a context which is more relevant and familiar to them.

Since 2012, SE Residency events in Dundee have included: performances in museums, care homes, hospitals and people’s front rooms; pop-up performances with local musicians in shopping centres and supermarkets; bespoke workshops for beginners and amateur orchestras; bringing music to art and life drawing classes, and much more.

MON 5 SEP
IN PARTNERSHIP WITH HM FRIGATE UNICORN
£12 / £5 student and Jobseekers / U16 and carers free | Buy tickets online or call 01382 434 940

All hands on deck! In one of our rarer appearances off dry land, we’re inviting schools and other groups along during the day for an exciting performance which recaptures what the atmosphere might have been like when this wonderful ship was in service. In the evening, renowned harpist Catriona McKay and fiddler Chris Stout come on board for a performance of Sally Beamish’s dramatic Seavaigers, which tells the story of a treacherous sea journey across Scotland’s stormy east coast, from Dundee to Stornaway.

TUE 6 SEP
IN PARTNERSHIP WITH NINEWELLS CHILDREN’S WARD & MAGGIE’S CENTRE

Patients at Ninewells’ Children’s Ward are treated to a special performance from a quartet of SE musicians, choosing from a Musical Menu which features film themes, pop songs, and some well-known classical pieces.

Meanwhile, the rest of the band will visit the beautiful Maggie’s building for a day of performances and participatory activities with the Maggie’s Dundee team and the huge range of people who use the centre. Maggie’s provides free practical, emotional and social support for people with cancer, their family and friends. The warm and welcoming centres are used by people at all stages of the experience, and from all walks of life.

WED 7 SEP
AMERICAN LIFE: THE CLOSING CONCERT AT CAIRD HALL
£12 / £5 student and Jobseekers / U16 and carers free | Buy tickets online or call 01382 434 940

From the pressing heat of the deep south to the sharp autumnal wind of the Appalachian trail to the anxious hum of the metropolis… Come with us on a journey through a North American landscape, and an evening of music rich with belief, fervour and visionary talent.

From the simmering cinematic joy of Philip Glass’ Company to the ecstatic frenzy of John Adams’ 20th-century masterpiece, Shaker Loops, we descend, gently, into Copland’s evocative, russet-toned depiction of a New England landscape, performed complete with clarinet, flute, bassoon and piano.
